Using real-time evolution experiments to explore sexual selection and conflict, from the gamete to the grave.

Research

Sexual reproduction creates a battleground – between rivals for access to mates, between the sexes over control of reproduction, and between genes that favour one sex over the other. Using the powerful model system Drosophila, we can better understand intra- and intersexual interactions, including mate choice and sperm competition for fertilization.

Teaching

Breathing life into the study of evolution using biography, stories, current research from the scientific literature and topical news items has made teaching a continuous challenge and pleasure. I am part of the first year team (BIOL 103), as well as doing the more specialized Sex and Evolution (BIOL 369).

Topics

  • Evolution of reproductive systems
  • Introductory evolution and ecology
