The Biology Department resides in the Biosciences Complex on the Queen's University campus. This facility also houses the School of Environmental Studies, as well as faculty from Chemistry, Geology and Geography, and three Chemical engineering labs. The Biosciences Complex at Queen’s University provides faculty, researchers and students with the tools of modern science—sophisticated equipment, high-tech laboratories, and the latest in teaching and learning facilities, featuring:
- 450 seat fully equipped lecture theatre
- 125 seat lecture theatres (2)
- 50 seat lecture theatre
- 30 seat classrooms / seminar rooms (2)
- 24 seat undergraduate laboratories (18)
- An undergraduate meeting / study area wired to the University’s computer network
- Leading-edge Phytotron, a $2.5 million facility for plant growth including six research-quality greenhouses and 25 plant growth chambers.
- The Queen's University Biological Station is the largest inland university research stations in Canada with over 2000 hectares of terrestrial and aquatic habitats. Each year it hosts myriad researchers from national and international universities, and field courses including such diverse themes as herpetology, limnology, botany, ornithology, aquatic biodiversity assessment, applied ecology and fisheries.
We also house:
- An advanced microscopy facility.
- Specialized laboratories for fermentation and bioprocessing research.
- A Core molecular laboratory for DNA marker development and screening.
- Research-quality laboratory space, built to Biohazard Level II standards.
- A unique animal care facility that permits the creation of special habitats for the long-term study of animal behaviour.
