Cell cycle control using fission yeast as a model organism.
Research
All cells undergo an orderly process of growth and duplication of their genetic material and it is essential for cell survival that the cell cycle is completed without mistakes. The underlying cell cycle machinery is affected by a variety of biochemical pathways impinging on the central control points. We mostly work on the molecular control of mitosis and the ways in which external stress or DNA damage regulate aspects of its function.
Teaching
My undergraduate teaching in recent years has been in the area of genetics and genomics. This has followed the rapid evolution of this emergent field which now affects most areas of biology and medicine. I also teach cell cycle control at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
