On rare occasions and exceptional circumstances, the Department may consider offering individualized credits to students who wish to pursue independent studies courses that do not fit within the conventional academic setting and are based outside the university infrastructure. For example, students who have developed industry-related linkages and thus want to take advantage of biological training opportunities outside the normal academic setting may be able to fashion an independent studies course out of the experience. Students who think they may have the foundations of an independent study course should contact a Faculty member who's research is most closely related to the topic and explore what can be done to convert the experience into formal course credit.
