The ecology and evolution of adaptation in a rapidly changing world.

Research

My students and I investigate how species adapt to diverse environmental challenges and also why they often fail to adapt. We work with plants because they are strange and wonderful organisms that allow us to test key hypotheses with large-scale geographic surveys, genomic analysis and controlled experiments in natural habitat.

Teaching

I teach in ecology and evolution, through lectures, field courses and informal workshops. My students and I explore the ecological and genetic mechanisms of evolution and why understanding this matters, from conservation and global change to medicine and agriculture.
