Biological processes convert environmental contaminants into detoxified compounds and commercially valuable products.

Research

Our research comprises studies in bioremediation and synthetic biology. These include biological processes that convert environmental contaminants such as heavy metals and excess nutrients into detoxified compounds and commercially valuable products. Investigations range from nanoparticle biosynthesis in microorganisms to bioremediation in integrated multi-trophic aquaculture, involving both basic and applied research.

Teaching

I teach the importance of basic discoveries for 'real-world' applications. I emphasize this principle in introductory biology, and in applied biology and biotechnology courses. Students enjoy participation and group interaction in my classes, to which I attribute my numerous teaching awards.
