Congratulations to Dr. John Smol who has recently been awarded the Donna Strickland Prize for Societal Impact of Natural Sciences and Engineering Research by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). This major NSERC award is given to a team or individual whose research has significantly benefited society, the environment, or the economy.
Considered the world’s leading paleolimnologist, Dr. John Smol has pioneered novel methods for reconstructing historical records of lake ecosystems to track human impact and climate change, providing invaluable knowledge for planning present and future environmental action. He founded and currently co-directs the Paleoecological Environmental Assessment and Research Laboratory (PEARL) at Queen’s University.
